I’ve
never been to Jekyll Island, but after hearing Blake and Elisabeth talk about
it, I want to go there! It has quite the history. It had some interesting
inhabitants, too, like people who thought a 20,000 square-foot house was a vacation
“cottage.” That’s because their other homes were more like 100,000 square feet.
Jekyll Island went from being a hunting preserve to a haven for millionaires. The
Federal Reserve System was conceived on Jekyll Island by some of the vacationing
millionaires who occupied those “cottages” in the early 1900s. Cool, huh?
Top row, right side:
The
first two photos were taken when Peter was staying with his Florida
grandparents while his parents were on Jekyll Island. Up to this point Peter
has been leery of horses. It was amazing Caleb was able to get him on the
horse. Not wanting to push his luck, they didn’t ride the horse; they just sat
on it.
Middle row, 1st spot:
Blake
and Elisabeth are on the wharf where millionaires like the Morgans,
Rockefellers, and Vanderbilts docked their yachts when they arrived at the island
in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Now there is a causeway between the island
and the mainland.
